Downington PA school hacked by 15yo.
by The Uni-Hacker on May.27, 2008, under Security
Records of 55,000 people ended up on a flash drive when a 15 year old hacked his/her own schools network. Police arrested the student on Friday and charged them with unlawful duplication and theft. The school was in a frenzy to upgrade the network software that the child hacked. Last December a 16 year old hacked into the same network. It’s obvious the school never upgraded then, and they’ll probably never get it secure.
The school district said it would tighten security by segregating its central server and remove generic permissions, as well as review it’s own auditing procedures.
Hacked twice by teenagers? It seems that the school is more concerned with punishing the kids then the integrity of their IT infrastructure.
Teachers left passwords on paper at Snow Canyon High School
by The Uni-Hacker on May.16, 2008, under Security
Teachers at the Snow Canyon High School left computer system password written on a piece of paper. Two students found the piece of paper and used the passwords to gain access to the schools grade system at which point they charged their fellow students up to $25 for a better grade. Both students were booked into detention centers while the investigation goes on.
No word has been given as to why the teachers were writing sensitive information down on paper and leaving it around for someone to find. A malicious hackers could have easily done some near irreversible damage to a lot of students. The teachers should be charged with negligence.
Yet another easy hack because of stupidity.
Jonah Greenthal blaimed for schools poor network security.

A New Trier Township High School senior was charged Wednesday with one count of misdemeanor computer tampering for allegedly breaking into the school’s electronic student records in February, and some parents and students are coming to his defense. -
“They’re carrying it too far,” said parent Nancy Nazari of Wilmette, who is the mother of a freshman and a recent graduate. Nazari, who does not know the Greenthals, came to the police station Wednesday because she feels the school is overreacting: “New Trier could have just taken care of this themselves. No one was hurt by this.” -Chicago Tribune
The school should have taken care of this internally, and there is no need to try and ruin a students life over the schools stupidity in not locking down their computers. It’s the schools fault, and the student should be given extra school credits for accomplishing such as task. I feel for the student. When I was in high school, the school wouldn’t let me take programming classes because I got a C in math. Well, I did some things I shouldn’t have to their computers. I should have trashed their whole network, which was running on Novell and Windows 3.11 at the time, a hackers playground!
The student used a personal laptop, connecting to the school network over wireless. Yay for insecure school networks!
